Haryy Potter
anyone going to see it this week?
Re: Haryy Potter
I saw the midnight showing, and I’m so far witholding my opinion because I haven’t quite been able to formulate one yet.

Let me put it this way.
If you walked into that movie with no prior knowledge of the books or the other movies, it’s a pretty visually entertaining romp through the wizarding world.
However.
If you’re a fan of the books, you’re going to constantly be going - WTF?! There are many plot points that have been completely thrown out of the movie. I’m assuming it’s all planned because the next movies will not be focusing so highly on certain elements of the story, but it doesn’t make a book fan very happy.
Also, for me, the emotional climax of the movie was just not handled well enough. It was too quick, and the aftermath was lame. I won’t go into detail, because I don’t want to spoil anyway, but you’ll know what I mean.
The movie was made so that it’s marketable to “everyone else”.
For the rest of us who were highly anticipating seeing all the magic that Jo brings to her stories - we will be sorely disappointed.

I think there are few movies made from books that are ever completely true to the original. Face it, there’s not enough room in a 2 1/2 hr movie to fit 400 pages. Lord of the Rings had many things cut out of it. And anyone let down by things being edited out is expecting way too much.

Trailer for the new one looks good, I wasn’t a fan of the last film/book but I did enjoy The Half Blood Prince so hopefully they can pull it off. I’m still not sold on splitting The Deathly Hollows into two films though. <!—s:-\—>

Life is like a ride at an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it, you think it’s real, because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up/down and it has thrills/chills. And it’s fun, for a while. When you’ve been on the ride for a long time, you begin to question: ‘Is this real? Or is this just a ride?’ And other people come back to us and they say ‘Hey! Don’t worry, don’t be afraid - ever - because… this is just a ride.’

Re: Haryy Potter
We went to a midnight screening and I have never seen that many kids up past their bedtime. Screenings are usually filled with 20-30 somethings, but this was 13 year olds and their parents. A lot of cosplayers, too, but they got obnoxious after a while trying to entertain the audience by running around and throwing beach balls.
The movie was very close to the book, the parts they kept, and the death scene was almost line by line, so I still don’t understand the complaints. It’s what I hate most about book movies. The people who get an impression of what it’s supposed to be aren’t really open to other people’s visions. I was actually impressed at how well this plot was condensed. They kept the major plot and still had time to add in all the love subplots. They almost spent TOO much time on it. They should have added more to the end, I would agree with that. I also don’t remember the scene at the Weasley’s house from the book, but maybe they added that in to create action because this was uncharacteristically an action-less film, at least compared to the rest of the series.
Book 6 is my least favorite, though, so I didn’t really care what happened to it- it’s like the 2nd POTC, it’s just a segway to the next movie. I almost don’t want them to break up book 7 because I think it’s a book they can cut a lot out of. Seriously, how long did they spend in the forest? I don’t want to watch a whole movie on that.

Re: Haryy Potter
That sad part is that my “non-spoilery review” of OotP from 2007 pretty much goes for HBP as well.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed seeing it, and I’m looking for an excuse to go again because it’s entertaining and enjoyable. Same went for OotP when it came out.
Here’s this year’s NSR:
The film version of a book will never ever compare, because that’s the beauty of books - it’s your imagination that creates the world. And what film studio could possibly live up to that? It is VERY rare that they are able to truly capture the essence of a book on screen. Take it for what it is an enjoy it—and for the love of god don’t spend the next week picking it apart like savage beasts!
And, something we can ALL agree on:

Can’t blame this one on me, it said Harry Potter (or rather Haryy Potter, lol) so I figured ANY of the entries was fair game. <!—s:P—>

And no I haven’t seen it yet but I’ve seen all the other ones. Not really in a rush either since the series seems to be pretty faithful to the books so there doesn’t seem to be much new there if you’ve already read the book.
