Artist Colony Question

I know registration was set to open on Thursday (May 3rd), so I gave it an extra day to be sure…

But, when I visited the AC page to register for a booth, I… can’t find a link to register.  In addition, the map on the AC page lists all the booths as “Unavailable”.

So, in short, one confused question: the booths haven’t all been taken already, have they? o_o;

The Connecticon Facebook page updated earlier today to say that all the booths have in fact been registered. I guess it’s possible that some booths might open up if there turns out to be a problem with any registrations.

There’s some talk about sharing tables in the Art & Artists section, too.

As of early this morning, all tables in the Artist Colony have been bought. The slots were snatched up a whole lot faster than any other year.

We will make an announcement if and when tables open up again. However, that is dependent on people who have already purchased a slot being unable to follow-though. We will not be adding additional tables to the Artist Colony, just opening ones that are dropped.

Is there any chance at all of simple tables—no bells and whistles like the booths—being added along the empty space on the left wall?  In fact, I’d be willing to pay the full 250 for the option to bring in my own table!

I ask because I, like a few other people I’ve since found, missed out because we followed the initial date of May 4th.  It is very disappointing to find this sold out despite our diligence in being here at 7PM on the 4th.  Since only 35 slots were even up for grabs, we were left with nothing, and it just doesn’t seem fair.  This idea would help to give all those that saw the wrong date another option.

I know this doesn’t seem like a big deal, what with all of the planning you do as staff, but I want to emphasize that it is a big deal to those who rely on this to supplement their income.  I made a point of scheduling time in my schedule to register yesterday because getting a table makes a huge difference in my summer budget.  (As a teacher, I don’t get as much tutoring work then!)  I even saw one poor college girl on tumblr who is freaking out a little because she needed the table to save for college.

Please consider my proposal, and thank you for your time.

While it would be nice to be able to add simple tables, the layout of the floor plan makes that exceedingly difficult. We negotiate the floor plan with the convention center well in advance, and it is very hard to make changes to it once it has been drawn up in contract. Also, the tables/booths are regulated by the convention center, so you would be unable to bring in your own without going through them.

The original date for opening the artist colony was on Thursday, the 3rd. While there was an error of putting the 4th down on these forums, this was fixed within a day. (And the facebook announcement has always said the 3rd). Seeing as we had the majority of people signup within an hour of registering, with the rest filling it by just after midnight, it does seem as the start-time was at least widely known enough to sell out.

We will take these things into consideration for next year, but as of now we simply do not have the flexibility to add additional spaces. The speed of which the colony filled up this year was unprecedented in our history. For the rest of the years we have been operating (Some years with more tables, some years with less). It has normally taken at least a week to sell out. With how fast things sold out this year, we will probably be tweaking a few things for next year.

I understand. It’s a legal issue. Thank you for your quick and thorough reply. I really appreciate being told the reasoning, all of which is very understandable.  I’m also very glad to hear that things will be edited in the future, considering how fast things sold out.  That heartens me for next year. =)

Nonetheless, the incorrect information is an oversight that I certainly hope can be prevented in the future.  I understand you can’t do anything for us at this point, but I don’t think it is necessarily our responsibility to plan around expecting mistakes in announcements.

I honestly didn’t check back to make sure the date was still the same.  I diligently checked the site every day until I saw a date and once I did, I just put it on my calendar. It would have seemed pointless to keep checking back after that, but in the future I will be more careful and continue to monitor the site closely to prevent this.  With the correct information being up longer than the incorrect, those of us that saw the first post only are certainly in the minority.  As it is, the people who checked less often/later throughout the next week were rewarded with the correct information, while those of us that checked often enough to see the first post were left misinformed.  That seems really unfair, so please be more careful in the future. I will endeavor to do so as well.

No problem. We would very much like people to know that we don’t just arbitrarily make these decisions. Thank you for understanding.

It was definitely a typo, Thursday the 4th instead of Thursday the 3rd. Though it was quickly pointed out that Thursday the 4th doesn’t exists. We will strive to be more careful in the future.

Sadly it was that very mistake that made me miss the sign ups, too. I saw the 4th and though it was final not thinking that it could possibly be wrong. I sincerely hope this doesn’t happen again and hope, even if it might be cruel, that more spaces open up so I can possibly try for a table still.

Maybe in the future, if something like this were to happen again, an email could be sent out to members that the date was wrong. I check my email regularly and would have seen that.
