Re: ConnectiCon 2011 Dealer’s Room Information

I have to ask, because this is something that really bothered me last year, and if they’ll be in the dealer’s room again this year… how is it that those contact lens dealers can have a space?! It is against the law in the United States to sell contacts to someone without a prescription. (See information from the FTC here: <!—m—>http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2004/06/contactlens.shtm<!—m—> ) Those dealers definitely were not asking for prescriptions from the people they were selling to. It’s illegal and very unsafe. :\

Re: ConnectiCon 2011 Dealer’s Room Information

From what I read at your link I’ll explain as best that I can, to get the best answer you’d have to contact the vendor directly.

I’ve read the law and I would guess that they’re selling lenses based on the following information from the link you provided: “Requires contact lens sellers either to obtain a copy of a patient’s prescription or verify the prescription before selling contact lenses, and deems a prescription “verified” if, among other things, a prescriber fails to respond to a seller’s verification request within eight business hours.” - “The Contact Lens Company” has been in operation since at least 2004 when I first encountered them at Otakon. Their website is http://www.exoticlenses.com/store/.

I will look into the issue further to see if they are actually breaking any laws - if they are we will refund their exhibitor fees and look to replace them with a different exhibitor before the convention begins. Thank you for your concerns and bringing this issue to our awareness.

In addition to selling lenses at ConnectiCon the vendor you are talking about also sell their lenses at the following conventions each year:

AnimeBoston
AnimeNEXT
Otakon
AnimeCentral
KatsuCon
NekoCon
AnimeAtlanta
Dragon*Con
NYCC/NYAF

I believe that law only refers to prescription contact lenses- those used for correcting vision. The lenses sold by that vendor are costume lenses, only meant to change the appearance of the eyes. They aren’t breaking any laws, as far as I know.

All contact lenses require a prescription, even if you do not need vision correction. Not everyone’s eyes are shaped the same, and contacts have variations in size/curvature. You need to be properly fitted by a doctor. If you don’t need your vision corrected, the power on your prescription would be listed as 0, but you would need the diameter and base curve. Reliable sellers of costume contact lenses (for example, the cosplaylab.com contact lens shop) will clearly state that by law, you need a prescription, even if you only want unpowered lenses. (If you’re at all interested, here’s an article about “over-the-counter” costume contacts: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/10/26/earlyshow/living/parenting/main6992925.shtml)

Problem with that is, the convention doesn’t happen during what would be considered “business hours”, save for Friday morning and afternoon, even IF they were actually contacting people’s eye doctors. So anyone who wanted to buy contacts would have to get them first thing Friday, or else… wait until Monday when the convention is no longer going on? Which obviously isn’t how they operated.

The law was put into effect in 2005, so their practices were legal until then. Now, however, they’re not. Selling these at a convention where there are tons of people (especially teenagers) who might not realize they’re potentially dangerous and decide to get some for fun is not a good plan. :\  There is also no way to contact them through their website, the links are broken.

Re: ConnectiCon 2011 Dealer’s Room Information

I have had my eyes check for there size and I fall under a standard contact.

I think the problem is not the normal contact, but the ones that make you eyes look almost anime drawn eyes (very big).  They dry the eyes out really bad and have been know to have people in the ER and have them “Peeled from the cornia” and the removed layer of protection on the eye and causes MAJOR problems in vision and health of the eye.  I found a article about it a few months ago and can not find it, but some of them are called Cirlcle Lenses or Manga Lenses.

You’re right about the circle lenses, but the problem does lie with normal contacts as well… with either regular or circle lenses, you can severely damage your eyes if you don’t have the proper prescription and don’t know what you’re doing. Circle lenses are generally considered more dangerous to those who don’t know what they’re doing because they are very large and therefore harder to insert, and can restrict the amount of oxygen reaching your eyes. I believe that they are not currently approved for sale in the US, which is mainly what has stirred up so much of the controversy around them. But they CAN be safe so long as you are buying from a reputable seller, know your prescription, know how to properly care for/wear contacts, and do not leave them in longer than the recommended amount of time.
