Re: In Memoriam This Past Week

Sadly, another person to add to this thread. Longtime Massachusetts senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy died last night about a long battle with brain cancer. He was too ill to attend the funeral of his sister Eunice Shriver, who also died earlier in August. His life was full of triumphs and tragedies, but he always fought for what he believed in. He was 77 and had been a senator for nearly 50 years. R.I.P.

And now DJ AM has died.  Found dead today in his Manhattan apartment.  Prescription pills and drug paraphernalia was found there too.  He was 36.

Re: In Memoriam This Past Week

This seems to be the worst year in recent memory for celebs/public figures dying.

Life is like a ride at an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it, you think it’s real, because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up/down and it has thrills/chills. And it’s fun, for a while. When you’ve been on the ride for a long time, you begin to question: ‘Is this real? Or is this just a ride?’ And other people come back to us and they say ‘Hey! Don’t worry, don’t be afraid - ever - because… this is just a ride.’

Never followed much of Travers or Gelbart but…..

Gibson will always be the head of the Illinois Nazi’s to me. <!—s:’(—>:'(<!—s:’(—>

Also, you KNOW that this is happening up in heaven somewhere right now-

They had the time of their life.

Possibly Rowdy Roddy Piper too according to my ex-wrestler friend, he’s supposed to have a bad case of cancer or something but maybe he’ll be the exception this year?

Re: In Memoriam This Past Week

I thought for sure Mike C. would beat me to the punch again. Ironically, I mentioned a classic WWF icon above but in fact it was another who I’m adding to the list here-

Captain Lou Albano.

Albano died of natural causes on October 14, 2009, aged 76, while under hospice care at his home.[19] He is survived by his wife Geri, four children and 14 grandchildren.

I totally missed this until I got my issue of Time today and it shocked me since he seemed like he kept in good shape for his age. For those unfamiliar with him, he played Mario on The Super Mario Brothers Super Show, was in a number of Cyndi Lauper vids (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Goonies R Good Enough, and She Bop to name a few), and was one of the greats of the WWF era.

I actually think he was my favorite of all the Mario voice actors as well, no disrespect towards Peter Cullen, Walker Boone, or Charles Martinet but I’ve always heard his voice in my head whenever I see the character for some reason. He also voiced his own alter ego on Hulk Hogan’s Rock’n Wrestling.

Never had the opportunity to meet him but he seems like he was really cool in interviews and was gracious to his fans too.

Another entertainer leaves us. Comic Soupy Sales was 83 and in very ill health. He was the original “pie in the face guy” and was seen regularly on TV in the 60s and 70s. He hosted his own kiddie show and was a regular panelist on What’s My Line?. Always smiling, the world of comedy is a little sadder now. R.I.P. Soup.

Gah, beat me again! Before my time but I do remember catching him in re-runs at my Grandpa’s.

^ Like Lou Albano, Soupy was also in a hospice when he died. Forgot to say that Soupy was also the voice of Donkey Kong on Ssaturday mornings. He was a deejay on WNBC 66 AM radio in NYC in the 80s, he was sandwiched after Don Imus and before Howard Stern. In the 60s, he got into hot water one New Year’s Day on his kiddie show when he told the kids to go into Mommy’s purse and talk all of that “green stuff with the men pictured on it” and mail it to him. He was suspended for two weeks, but he and his show got a ton of publicity. He had the same birthday as Elvis Presley, January 8. One adult joke I remember from him:

Did you hear about the newlywed couple who had their honeymoon during the World Series?
It was really something. He kissed her between the strikes and she kissed him between . . .

I’ll be here all week, try the shrimp!!

Brittany Murphy at 32. Apparently, she collapsed from what I’ve gathered.

I could see the OTHER Britney going in such a way but not this one.

Damn, just when I thought we’d seen the last of the unexpected celeb deaths this year. Same age as a friend of mine I was just talking to as well. : /

Re: In Memoriam This Past Week

I was just made aware of the death of Dan O’Bannon. Apparently, he had Crohn’s disease which another good friend of mine suffers from.

He was the writer and one of the creative minds behind such classics as: Alien, Dead and Buried, Heavy Metal, Blue Thunder, Lifeforce, The Return of the Living Dead, and Total Recall.

Death’s come in three’s as they say, so I wonder who will be next on here before the end of the year?

Re: In Memoriam This Past Week

2009 had MJ and 2010 has JD Salinger at 91 due to natural causes. Both were reclusive and trailed by controversy but left an undeniable impact on their era and respective artistic fields.

I’m pretty sure everyone on here read Catcher In The Rye as I did back in High School, regardless of your age.
