As I’m sure many of you have heard, the live action movie trilogy adaptation of AtLA (to be titled “The Last Airbender”) directed by M. Night Shyamalan is well underway. The roles of Sokka, Katara, and Zuko—characters that are of ethnicities based on Inuit and Asian cultures—have all been filled by white actors. I won’t say what has already been said over and over again, but if you are a fan of Avatar, or even just interested in doing your part to keep Hollywood from white-washing yet another movie, I encourage you to check out the sites below.

GanXigba of YouTube explains in very nice, concise terms a basic idea of what is going on:

The place that started it all, and “headquarters” for the letter-writing campaign:

A facebook group to support the cause:

And, if you find yourself going “YEAH! I TOTALLY SUPPORT THIS! I WANT TO DO MORE!!” there is also a protest (associated with the above facebook group) in Philadelphia on February 7:

Unfortunately, these groups will probably have NO impact on the actual outcome of changing the actors. If the actors have already been cast, then they probably already have contracts with the studio. The time to act would have been before people were actually cast.

That, and the creator’s of avatar probably weren’t looking out for authenticity when they hired M. Night Shyamalan as the director anyway. Scraping the bottom of the barrel is more like it.

Actually M Night appoarched them, his daughter is a fan of the show, and the creators loved his Idea for the Live Action Movie. As for those Groups, power vs people generally doesnt end well.

Everyone involved is well aware that they’re most likely not going to change their casting choices—that’s not our point. The point is that what they’re doing is wrong, and we’re not going to let them do it quietly. Hopefully it will have enough of an impact that for future movies, those in the movie business will think twice before whitewashing their casts. It has already gained a good amount of media attention (it was even mentioned in Entertainment Weekly, though it was very brief), so it’s well on it’s way to making an impression.

If you’re just going to say how this isn’t going to work, then don’t say anything at all, this message isn’t for you. <!—s:)—>:)<!—s:)—>

Obviously your right, but word to the wise, I work in the “BIZ” and a few angry people arent going to sway anything, you can continue on with this thread, but let it be known there are much more important things to fix other than a cast in a movie.
I am done with this thread, you can say what you want know good night Connecticut

Of course there are many more “important” things, but this isn’t just a bunch of fans whining about a movie cast. It has to do with race and disrespecting cultures, subjects that most would consider to be important. Yes, there are more important issues, but those are not necessarily relevant to the interests of ConnectiCon attendees. This, however, is; which is why I posted it here.

Like I said, if all you’re going to do is say how it won’t work, just don’t say anything at all. I didn’t post this to stir things up, I posted it to spread word to people who would potentially be interested.
