first question would be xp, vista, or 7. If you don’t know, go to start, right click computer or my computer, choose properties, then it will tell you right there what your OS is.

then from there, you have to enable internet sharing. On win 7 it has a few steps but they are pretty easy overall:

on the computer that has internet (your desktop), go to open network and sharing center (start < control panel < view network status and tasks) on the left hand side it will say change adapter settings, open that.

Yes I am doing it the long way.

right click the local area network icon and choose properties, there will be a tab called sharing, click on that. click on the two check boxes in that list then hit apply and okay. the computer should now be sharing it’s internet connection with any device connected via ethernet cable. then plug in and enjoy! Simple as calculus!

Now the process is simpler on xp (network > properties > sharing > check the sharing files box > profit) but I donno what your desktop is running nor do I know what your laptop is running so I hope there is no vistas there cause it’s a hair longer than the 7 setup.

other than that, hope I got to you in time!
